Closing Day: Final Steps to Handing Over the Keys

After all the showings, negotiations, and paperwork, closing day is finally here! It’s the finish line of your home-selling journey—and the start of a brand new chapter. Here’s what you can expect, how to prepare, and a few tips for making the day as smooth (and celebratory!) as possible.

What Happens at Closing?

Closing is when the sale becomes official. You’ll meet with your agent, the buyer, and often a closing agent or attorney to sign the final documents. Once everything is signed and the funds are transferred, you’ll hand over the keys and your home will officially change hands.

What to Bring

  • Photo ID: Bring a government-issued ID for verification.
  • Keys, Garage Openers, and Codes: Gather all the keys, remotes, and security codes for the new owner.
  • Forwarding Information: Have your new address handy for final paperwork and mail forwarding.
  • Any Final Documents: Your agent will tell you if there’s anything else to bring, like utility bills or warranties.

Preparing to Move Out

  • Schedule Utilities: Arrange for utilities to be transferred or shut off after closing.
  • Do a Final Clean: Leave the home tidy for the new owners—it’s a gesture that goes a long way.
  • Double-Check Everything: Walk through one last time to make sure you haven’t left anything behind.

Celebrating the Sale

Closing day is a big deal! Take a moment to reflect on your journey, snap a photo with your agent, and celebrate this milestone. Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, you’ve earned a fresh start and a chance to create new memories.

Congratulations on making it to closing day—here’s to new beginnings and happy adventures ahead!
