The Moving Process: What to Prepare Before and After Closing

Moving into a new home is an exciting adventure—but it can also feel overwhelming, especially if you’re a first-time buyer or it’s been a while since your last move. In Kansas and throughout the Midwest, planning ahead is the key to a smooth transition. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare for your move, both before and after closing, so you can focus on settling into your new space with confidence.

Before Closing: Set Yourself Up for Success

  • Organize and Declutter: Start sorting your belongings early. Donate, sell, or recycle items you no longer need—less to pack means less stress on moving day!
  • Get Quotes from Movers: Whether you’re hiring professionals or recruiting friends, book your help in advance. Compare quotes and check reviews to find a trustworthy team.
  • Gather Important Documents: Keep all your home-buying paperwork, IDs, and moving contracts in a safe, accessible spot—you’ll need them for closing and move-in day.
  • Set Up Utilities and Services: Arrange for utilities (electricity, water, gas, internet) to be transferred or started on your move-in date. Don’t forget to schedule trash pickup and mail forwarding!
  • Pack Smart: Label boxes by room and keep an “essentials” box with items you’ll need right away—think toiletries, chargers, snacks, and a change of clothes.

After Closing: Make Your Move-in Day a Breeze

  • Change the Locks: For peace of mind, swap out the locks on your new home as soon as possible.
  • Deep Clean (If You Can): If time allows, clean your new space before unpacking. It’s much easier before the boxes arrive!
  • Update Your Address: Notify the post office, banks, insurance companies, and anyone else who needs your new address.
  • Meet the Neighbors: Take a moment to introduce yourself—it’s a great way to start building community right away.
  • Unpack Strategically: Start with the kitchen and bedrooms, then work your way through the rest. Don’t rush—settling in takes time.
